Russ' Rant April 2014
By: Russell Severnuk
Hello everyone, I know it’s been a while since I’ve written but I have to admit I had lost all hope of ever digging out from all the snow and have just been down in the dumper with all those cold days. It all started back in early December when we went to Panorama to “ski with the pros” and it turned out to be -30 every day. I can tell you from experience you don’t want to spend that much time in plastic ski boots in those temperatures. It takes a good ten to twenty minutes for them to thaw just so you can take them off. Then your feet begin to throb just like when you were 10 years old and played pond hockey all day and your mom had to pull your skates off and you were screaming in pain… Well, we’re a bit older now and don’t scream as loud anymore but it still hurts the same. The good news, we knew we were only going to be there for 5 days and could be back to normal December temperatures here in the Beaver Valley and could ski at Blue Mountain.
Looking forward to stepping outside without body parts falling off again, we arrived in Toronto to welcoming -15 and it seemed to go sideways from there. Shortly after that the ice storms came along and left half of Toronto out in the cold for a week or so. And then it seemed to settle in where morning temps would range from -25 to -30 on a regular basis. Oil, gas and propane companies were panicking about shortages until they figured out they could just raise the rates 30% or so and make a killing. So yes, big business is out to get us once again without any interference from our beloved competition bureau. The snow kept coming and is still coming. The snow banks are so high along our road I can’t even climb over them.
I’m writing this part of my rant while sitting in my hotel room in Ottawa March 30th, 2014 and much to my displeasure, we got 6 to 8 inches of snow overnight… People are making comments on facebook that it’s following me around. Maybe you’ll pay me not to visit you! What’s it worth not to receive another foot of snow at your house? Okay so we know that’s not possible but the big question is “when will it stop”? Maybe we should start a pool and sell tickets.. Let’s hope we’ve finally turned the corner and get back to a normal life without having to shiver everyday… And I can return to writing this column on a regular basis. And of course, all the outdoor work I wanted to do over the past 5 months is still there and I’m so looking forward to a few straight days of mild temps. Okay, STOP THE PRESSES!!! I’m in the office here in Kimberley on Saturday April 5th and the drive in was white knuckling with whiteouts and blowing snow….. I thought this was over! Who turned this back on??? Alright, I’m calling “UNCLE”!!!!
I also bet a number of you are wondering what’s happening at Talisman as well…… Our task force report is almost complete and we’ll be delivering it to the Municipal Council April 9th with a public presentation April 16th. Stay close to your computer and you’ll soon get all the details. Until then, stay warm my friends….
